Christian Shaw’s personal website

🙂
Hi, and welcome to this very bare bones website; it’s still a work in progress. But I hope it shall one day spark delight in all who visit.

Who am I?

  • I am an effective altruist. When it comes to morality, I think our psychology and culture haven’t kept pace with technology and globalisation. Human brains and cultures developed in worlds where our decisions could only really impact those in our immediate neighbourhood, whereas now you can open your phone and send money instantly to anyone on earth. If you give £4,000 to the right charity, you can save a child’s life.
  • Given we have the opportunity to do more good (and more harm) than any generation before, I believe it’s extremely important to carefully consider how to best use our time and money to do good. I now work full time to help talented and ambitious students do as much good as they possibly can.

  • I am a Christian, albeit newly converted. My life is a lot better as a result. I have written a little about it here.
  • I am (kind of) an economist. I have a bachelor’s degree in economics, and I rely a lot on the tools and models and heuristics I picked up along the way. On the other hand, most of the cool/interesting/useful stuff I learned during university I learned through the internet and friends, rather than through my courses.
  • I am a Londoner. I am very lucky to live in such a globally significant and opportunity-rich city. Living here fostered my interest in urban and spatial economics. I am very fond of London.
